RE: Creation of a proposed, advanced earthquake research bulletin board

This note is specifically for the monitors of the Yahoo EarthWaves board. But it should also be posted to the board so that people know what might be on the horizon for earthquake forecasting research and communications.

Now that my earthquake forecasting computer program is available for free downloads I am among other things going to try to get a bulletin board something like Canie’s EarthWaves board created. It will probably look much the same but have a very different permission structure for who can post original notes and which notes will allow responses and which ones will not.

The following is a proposed format for one type of data entry screen that could be used:

There would be multiple data entry screens depending on what the board visitor wanted to do. And there would probably be multiple Web pages that were created and displayed by the CGI program. At the moment I am getting set to post notes to computer Newsgroups to look for volunteers to do the CGI programming work. I could do it myself but am not a professional programmer. So my own efforts would be very slow.

The bulletin board might also be used to collect, process, and display earthquake precursor information such as notes about when Ear Tones were heard as well as store and display records of predictions. The following is an example of one possible type of display for precursor data:

That report has been around for a while!

Question:

Would any of the Yahoo EarthWaves board monitors also like to serve as board monitors for this new bulletin board should it ever get created? I expect that because of its flexibility and ability to work for so many different specialty groups it might eventually duplicate and perhaps even replace both Canie’s and the Yahoo boards.

The board would have one option that would specify that responses to certain posts would need to be cleared by board monitors. They would just ensure that the response post did not contain any inappropriate material.

Several of the major problems with presently existing bulletin boards are the facts that either every note has to be examined by a board monitor, or if any board member can post a response, those responses might at times be unwanted by the person who generated the original post. With this specialized board the person who posted the original note could choose from a variety of response options including one where no responses would be allowed.

One of the main reasons that relatively few scientists are posting notes anywhere regarding their earthquake forecasting research is because they don’t like to have to deal with negative responses to their posts or be forced to answer endless questions about them. Quite often they simply want to post a progress report type of note and not have to say anything else about it.

This proposed bulletin board might even have an option where a person posting a note could specify who is allowed to read his or her post and who is not. At times researchers might want to circulate some type of confidential information to a small group of other researchers and not to everyone on the planet.

I think that the Meteoquake people might be interested in serving as a host for such a bulletin board. Unfortunately they are not CGI experts and would need some help with getting it organized at their site.

Perhaps Canie would be interested in hosting it as a replacement for her own board as it would probably reduce the amount of time she has to spend running it.

So, people who are interested in this can try contacting me about it. That will not be regarded as an agreement of any sort. I just want to see what interest there might be out there in the subject. Feel free to add your own comments.

Finally, much to my surprise, my earthquake forecasting computer program appears to work much better than I thought it could. I thought that it might point to a certain percentages of our earthquakes. And a lot of refinements would have to be added to increase the percentage. But it already does much better than expected. The is the newest Web page that will probably be expanded fairly rapidly. It explains how to interpret the Charts, Maps, and Reports that the computer program generates.

These are personal opinions.
