Earthquake Warning Cancelled March 27, 2009

It appears that recently detected electromagnetic pulse signals (EM signals) http://www.freewebz.com/eq-forecasting/Data.html were likely pointing to the approach of activity in the Redoubt volcano area rather than to a significant earthquake.

An earthquake warning that had been internationally circulated was cancelled on March 26, 2009.

It was highly suspicious that so many of those EM signals were pointing to the same location. Normally earthquake related signals are more random looking. On the other hand, the fact that so many of the signals looked so similar is a good indicator that the probability equations being used to link EM signal times with past earthquakes are generating much higher quality data than was thought possible.

The following is a map for those EM signals. It was generated using the freeware downloadable computer program presently available through several Web site.

The chart associated with those signals was previously available at the Web site but not the map. It was regarded as being too specific for where an earthquake might occur. The Caribbean area was clearly identified on the map as being a possible location for seismic activity. And with this forecasting program, efforts are usually made to try to keep people living in areas such as that one from becoming unnecessarily concerned. The maps can be easily generated using the data available at the Web site with the downloadable computer program.

In my opinion, it is quite remarkable that a computer program could generate data such as those. The program uses probability equations to match past earthquakes with the times that the EM signals are detected and the strength of the signals. And that map clearly pointed to the area of the Redoubt volcano around 155 W longitude as being one of interest.

When areas like that are identified by the program, area residents are being advised to check for other signs of an approaching earthquake (precursors). They could be things such as large, fresh cracks in building foundations, unusually large amounts of static on television and radio transmissions, and abrupt changes in ground and well water levels etc.

In this case the “precursor” appears to have been a volcano blowing its top, not too difficult to spot!

Newly stored data at the Web site are similar types of maps and charts for the devastating January 26, 2001 earthquake in India and the two highly destructive 1998 earthquakes in Afghanistan. Data for those earthquakes that can be used with the downloadable computer program are also stored at the site.

The next projects related to this effort will probably be to store information at the Web site regarding how to evaluate the map, chart, and report data in order to determine where an earthquake might be about to occur, and recommendations for future efforts such as the creation of limited access CGI programs that will let people around the world store their precursor and forecast data at Web sites and also compare notes with one another regarding earthquake forecasting methods and specific forecasts.

These are personal opinions.
