Extremely complex technology |
There isn't anything particularly mysterious going on here in my opinion. The main problem is the fact that the technology I am working with has become so extremely> complex. The earthquake forecasting computer program being discussed has been running on my own computer for a while now. Improvement are being constantly made. But up until last August 2 I was unable to share the technology with other people because it would have required that they install a Perl compiler on their computer and purchase one or more external programs for doing specialized data generation. And the work could only be done on a PC type computer running a fairly recent version of Windows. The Perl compiler is easy to install. But then special application modules have to be downloaded and linked with it. And that would be just too much effort for most people. Until recently I myself did not know exactly how to install them. Each time I need a new module I tried this or that until I finally got the process to work. On August 2 I unexpectedly discovered how to create .exe versions of the software. And that opened the door for circulating all of the computer programs. Since then virtually all of the efforts have been focused on getting the main program into a form where it would run reliably and with documentation that explained how to run it and what all of the different options were for. Additionally, a retired professional computer programmer then started working on some support software that generates the same type of information that are generated by the software that people would have had to purchase. His program has been running for several months. And it works much better than the original software. Right now I am focusing on finalizing an html Web page that explains how the program works and what it can do. The next step will then probably be storing a download copy at a Web site that is already organized for that. This general project has been underway for several decades. And it is taking some time and a lot of work to prepare documentation etc. discussing decades of research and a computer programming effort that has been in progress for at least a decade.
