Hi Pavel,

The following are some comments on the subject of earthquake forecasting data circulation.

I myself have been circulating formal or informal earthquake warnings for more than a decade. My first formal warning was circulated was on December 30, 1994, a little more than two weeks before the catastrophic earthquake in Kobe, Japan that reportedly claimed more than 5000 lives. Unfortunately at that time I had no computer programs or other resources to use for determining the location of an expected earthquake. All I had to work with were electromagnetic pulses that could have been pointing to any location.

Something that I have found to be a major problem with forecasting is the lack of formally structured resources for circulating forecast data. To deal with that problem, years ago I myself put together an enormous list of E-mail addresses for governments and disaster mitigation groups around the world. And when necessary I send the appropriate parties a warning or advisory E-mail.

That process works. But it is not a very efficient or effective way to do business.

The following posting at this board was intended to a large degree to discuss that information circulation problem.

The Meteoquake Web site appears to be largely devoted discussing earthquake forecasting and earthquake forecasts.

Meteoquake

I myself am presently spending most of my time getting my own forecasting computer programs ready for circulation. But another project on the list of things to do involves seeing if would be possible to establish a formal precursor data and forecast resource at the Meteoquake site. It would probably be necessary to create a CGI computer program for that. Forecasters etc. would then visit the site and submit their data to the program via a data entry Web page screen. And the CGI program would process the data and store and display the results. That can already be done to a certain extent with this bulletin board. But the display process needs to have a more organized structure.

A number of years ago I had a CGI program that did something like that running at the earlier version of this EarthWaves board. And it ran unattended for a year. What would mainly be needed now for the creation of another such program is someone with the necessary time and Web site development skills. I don’t presently have the time and am also not a CGI program development expert.

Until such an information circulation resource becomes available I would second the recommendation that you post some of your forecast data to this bulletin board. And I would suggest that you enroll in the Yahoo EarthWaves group if you are not already a member, and post your forecast data to that board. This board’s thread type structure is better for discussions in my opinion. But the Yahoo board automatically sends E-mail letters containing posted information to its members if they choose that option. And postings can be submitted by sending an E-mail letter to the board. It is moderated. Submissions have to be approved by one of the board managers before they are posted and circulated by E-mail.
