"The prediction of two large earthquakes in Greece" (John V?)

Pretty interesting short article in te Sept 23 issue of EOS Transactions AGU (vol 89 no 39) by Seiya Uyeda and M. Kamogawa.

Says that the VAN method (Greeks) predicted the M6.9 Feb 14 2008 Greek quake within a 2.5 deg square, and that the "front page of the Greek newspaper Ethnos announced that a magnitude 6 earthquake would occur imminently in the predicted area."
The quake occured 4 days later. Sounds like the prediction was published 2 weeks before the quake: must have been an on-line publication?

The VAN method has been around for decades, and I was interested, and heard lots of criticism about both the predictions (exxagerated) and the method...this was 10 to 20 hyears ago, more or less. Some of the criticism was from Greek seismologists, but I have forgotten the reasons. VAN uses some kind of geo-electric signal in the ground.

I recall that Uyeda was a convert to this method a long time ago.

10 to 20 years ago American scientists were probably pretty quick to say B.S. for predictions. The last few years they have had to take short term prediction more seriously, and SCEC has a big effort going to study the physics of whether earthquakes can be predicted (and to evaluate physics-based predictions)

John V: we have not heard from you in quite a while...
