Re: We just had an earthquake/heartland floods |
Cathryn, HD is headed out to UCSC Saturday. Thought I'd spend a little time with her this week so we headed out the rail to trail Monday, but it was flooded and we finally turned around when my bike was entirely submerged. We went again today and made it through...but the trail was torn up for stretches. I'd gone out that way with no problem, including last year when the Missouri was 2 feet higher...but this was a flood of a tributary (5" rain from ex-hurricane Ike)...when we were out Monday we could see that the water had been maybe 4 feet higher. Today, it had dropped 10 feet until we got to where it was backed up from the Missouri. The water had flowed a couple of feet over the deck of the bridges (former railway bridges). While the tributary flood seems extreme, the Missouri River has flooded 3 or 4 times so far this year. I imagine Jane in Kansas is doing OK..some heavy rains there this year but not like last year. No opinion as to why, but it is the wettest year on record here and St. Louis and probably a bunch of other places.
