I read the link. You should be OK in Vermont. If the top of the volcano is at 1500 m, then it seems unlikely that it would be able to blast large amounts of gasses directly to atmosphere. There was a destructive eruption in Iceland in 18th(?) century (Laki?) that killed a lot of the crops and/or animals and so may have ended up killing a lot of the Icelanders. I think it was the gases that caused the problems. This may have had wider effects (northern Europe?). I'm not a volcanologist and if you really want to know about Laki(?) you should google it.
