I love informed discussion. I love the term "Elsinore Enigma." That's right up there with the "Chaos" in Death Valley, and the term "dismembered ophiolite" as one of geology's neatest terms. John McPhee gets into this eloquently in his series geology.

However, I gotta say here that the old "nobody knows for sure" is still valid. Had an email from a friend in Balboa after the little 3.1 Newport quake last week. They were happy because they thought this had taken the stress off of the Newport/Inglewood Fault. I hated to tell them the truth---oh well.
