The focal mechanism is on the European page and is slightly oblique normal slip. So, there are a few choices about whether I can be right about Armutlu Peninsula being a thrust fold: 1: I am not right 2: There is stretching near the end of the 1999 rupture. 3: There is localized stretching in this area because of its position related to the large (releasing) double bend in the main north strand North Anatolian fault in this area. (there are a set of normal-seperation faults that cut the seafloor here, and the NAF itself is south dipping and normal separation through the double bend). 4: Armutlu formed earlier when the activity on the various NAF strands was different. 5: You can have extension and contraction at the same time. Any of these could be correct. All could be partly correct. Chris
