Penny has it correct. I Googled luyendyk seeps coal oil point and a lot comes up. The seeps have decreased in the area of oil production. Quite a few time when I fly the small commuter flight from LAX to SBA I can see the seeps from the window. There is a nice intro to a 1969 volume (Weaver) that is probably out of print that discusses the Spanish explorers noticing all the oil (16th century?), as well as the plank boats of the Chumash caulked with tar. There are various seeps that are still flowing onshore between Ojai and Santa Paula: one leaks right out of the San Cayetano fault (Silverthread (??) oil field). Chris
