Re: Google Earth Shows It At Wheeler Ridge

I remember the 1952 quake very well, even though I was a child at the time. It helped pique my interest in geology! It also began this darned "apparent" pattern of early morning quakes! And no, I don't really think that this is of much significance! The Pleito Thrust/Wheeler Ridge/White Wolfe area seems to be some sort of system that wasn't well understood when I studied it several years ago. I always wonder about this area when I travel up the Grapevine because you can clearly see a dramatic series of fault scarps, and the streams seem to be doing some rather rapid erosion through the area, suggesting rapid uplift. Once mapped old lake beds in the region which can be clearly seen to the west of the freeway above the Pyramid Reservoir. Right now, that area seems to be having a series of small quakes, so it caught my notice. There was, as I recall, a strong aftershock in 1952 nearer to the Bakersfield area, which caused more structural damage. A similar quake today would affect so many more people.
