Re: ExxonMobil position on climate change

An official position on climate change from ExxonMobil is linked below. I suppose I should read this again, but my take is that their position is pretty weak, and they are not doing much to address the problem. Unlike the senator from Oklahoma and right wing talk radio, they are not denying there is likely a problem. They just choose to not take it seriously except saying the minimum to stop looking as ridiculous as they did: there is real hostility to ExxonMobil among some in the research community..probably including a lot of people who work in polar science (includes me). I was on their web site to see whether 2 companies here in the heartland that sell most of the gas were subsidiaries of ExxonMobil because I have been boycotting ExxonMobil more or less for the last year, but had not checked whether they owned the companies where I buy my gas (it looks like they do not).

What offended me and a lot of other people is that they funded front groups that deliberately distorted climate science. This was outlined in an article in the journal Science about a year ago. I've heard they stopped doing this, but also hear they have not stopped doing this: does anyone have information on this?
From the ExxonMobil link:
"There is a risk that human activity, including man's use of fossil fuels and land use changes, is contributing to climate change, so it is prudent to develop and implement strategies to address that risk. At the same time, we must also continue to improve our understanding of climate science so that policies and actions can be adapted as we understand the risks better."
