What caused earthquake was probably beyond scope of this paper. He may not have had problem with strike slip earthquakes...he had a problem with them accumulating tens or 100s of km of slip. I was trying to sort through the boxes my home office had been traveling in and looked again at a bunch of stuff I was sent by yet another oil geologist who questioned large slips on parts of the San Andreas. I needed up saving rather than tossing this stuff: he had some useful cross sections, and lots of details on geology that I can not deal with because I have not worked in those areas...but could be useful to someone later on. Then, there is John Wakabayashi (sp?), who has a paper in a major journal (Tectonics?) questioning slips on strands of the San Andreaqs fault system in the Bay area...one strand has far less (10 km rather than 100??) and another has far more....but he probably does end up with total slip on strands combined that is similar to what others have come up with: I did read that paper, but once, and a long time ago.
