If he had simply tried to show enhanced seismicity at greater distances than previously demonstrated, which turned out to be true, people would have eagerly read the argument.

However, to my knowledge, he never separated that conjecture (if he indeed made it) from a boatload of nonsense. I don't see any evidence of such conjecture in a quick search of Google Scholar and the Web of Science.
