Well, as Shakespeare wrote: "There's the rub" (I haven't read much of Shakespeare, I just like to appear erudite).

Well, a very brief Google search using "Whiteside" and "Far field aftershocks" revealed little. I would be very interested in finding out just what is "so special" about that zone. Logically, at the margins of an unusual phenomenon, that phenomenon would be expected to diminish.
