1. The stress on the fault
2. The stress drop in the earthquakes
3. The critical stress on the fault?

And how much do these quantities vary across and along the fault?

And the story is not so simple, as the critical stress probably depends on how the fault is loaded, with a greater strength in the face of dynamic than static stresses. Perhaps his conceptual model has no place for viscous reloading, either.

I think these quantities are so poorly known that many things are possible.
