The 1995 stuff was also Dolan et al,,,that there was a moment deficit for southern California and either there needed to be a lot of M6s or 6.5s, or there had to be some larger quakes. Later, there were articles saying that analysis was flawed...but I may not have read those articles (I have to read more!). I'd say it is certain that you can have much larger quakes beneath and adjacent to LA: M7+s. We just put in a SCEC abstract talking about one source of large but rare quakes. Chris...at Philadelphia airport motel...headed to Santa Barbara tomorrow for the ISAES (I think International Symposium Antarctic Earth Science...every 4 years.
