Re: offshore Malibu vs. LA |
It is likely that the faults along and beneath Malibu Coast do not slip very fast...maybe 2 mm/yr combined. The San Andreas fault slips about 35 mm/yr in central California and the San Jacinto and San Andreas combined slip that fast in southern CA. Faults along Ventura Basin to near Santa Barbara slip maybe 6 mm/yr in the west (less from Santa Barbara West) and a bit more near Fillmore. So, areas affected by these faults will be subject to large EQs much more often than will the Malibu Coast (from the nearby faults). Ventura Basin and Los Angeles basin (and to a lesser extent San Fernado Valley) will have the seismic waves much amplified because of the slow velocity structure or the basin. So, Los Angeles, Fillmore, Ventura, probably have (much?) higher seismic risk than does Malibu. But, maps of risk are available, so use the official stuff....this is just an explanation of why...
