Computer update (OT) |
Hi all; Just in case anyone is interested... After days of struggling with Win XP I discovered that some things just won't work. I was trying to install Encarta Virtual Globe but it couldn't find some files. I had installed XP in a different directory and apparently VG expected the files to be somewhere else. Reinstalling XP cured that and VG installed without a hitch. Then I wanted to use Stereo Shell, a DOS file manager I just HAVE to have. But it wouldn't show 30 lines full screen, it insisted on either a 30 line window or a 50 line full screen display. Turns out XP uses a DOS emulator and a lot of commands won't work. Way to go, Bill. So I set up a dual partition with XP in one and Win98SE in the other. That works fine using Linux grub boot manager to hide them from each other. I also have 10 different Linux versions on the hard disk in case I get bored. Then I needed a better graphics card so I could set the gamma on my screen, which has no brightness control. My son had a Rage 128 Pro but no drivers. Turns out I needed 2 different drivers for XP and 98 and the ATI website was being balky that night. But all is well now. Until the next crash, I imagine.
