P wave detector |
I think it relies on an internet signal from JMA (not sure why the article called it JAMA), which in turn depends on detecting P-waves at the stations closest to an earthquake. At their most sophisticated, such systems take into account both stations that have and haven't yet felt an earthquake, and start incorporating information from the S and surface waves once those also reach the closest stations.
