The most spectacularly controversial article I've seen in EOS was someone saying we should put a dam across the straights of Gibralter, and we should do it before it was too late. This was probably a decade ago. It had something to do with the Aswan High dam on the Nile cutting off fresh water, (or dense sediment-laden water? I think it's fresh water), and this was going to eventually mess with Atlantic ocean circulation. Even if half was wrong, perhaps it was a stimulating-enough article that raised interesting points...probably similar points to what is proposed due to global warming.
