Thanks, John. I was prepared to chalk up my difficulties with his argument entirely to my own ignorance. But I see you had some problems with it, too.

As to your guess re Lomnitz' Parkfield argument - I hadn't thought of that. But he didn't specifically mention the regularity of recurrence issue. As you suggest, though, that was the basis of the Parkfield prediction.
