Hi All. I thought I would bring you up to date as to the latest information from USGS.

Starting this summer they will be installing 10 new data sites in the Bay Area. Guess what? Two of them will be on either side of the southern portion of the Rodgers Creek Fault. I was able to obtain permission to photograph the work in progress. This will also give me the chance to ask a lot of questions. Unfortunately I was unable to obtain permission for Petra to be there with me. That means she will be madder then a wet cat.

One site will be near Wildcat Creek on the east side of the fault. The other will be on the west side on a ranch.

Two boreholes will have to be drilled to a depth between 600ft. to a 1000ft, as the instruments have to be set in unfractured bedrock. The data will be the full set up. Creep, tensor and dilational strain, tilt and magnetic. It is not know for sure as to when the data will be installed. It will be either late this summer, or next summer.

It is believed the last major quake on that section of the fault was around 1600. This was determined by digging some trenches across the fault. With the amount of creep that is going north it was felt that a better look should be taken of the area. I forget what the amount of creep is, but I think it’s somewhere around 4 to 7mm a year.

There has been little to no movement along that portion of the fault. There were 6 small quakes in 1981, and a small one a couple of days ago. Other then that there just doesn’t seem to be any movement at all. The last quake to be felt along that fault was the quake at Rohnert Park. That is north of the area that appears to be locked.

Other then that I can’t think of anything else that Petra and I have learned about Rodgers Creek Fault.

Almost forgot. Petra will be going with me. I also received permission for her. I would be a dead man if I didn’t. I just had to rub the kitty’s fur backwards. Take Care…Don in creepy town
