The main reason for any point system is to try and discriminate between those people whose predictions may actually have some validity and those who are deluding themselves (and possibly others) by making pseudo-predictions that are easily fulfilled by chance, and then claiming a successful track record. It's not really for the predictor's benefit; more for the benefit of those uncertain of how much credence the predictor deserves.
