On the African side of things, with tectonics, it had been believed that when one plate subducts under another plate, the plate on top rises such as the Himalayas above India. With Africa, there is no such subduction going on, but its still rising. Why? A very hot portion of the mantle resides under the southern boundaries of Africa.

BTW, all this stuff also affects gravity and magnetic fields.
