Hi Cathryn, I don't think 7 days of rain makes much difference for a true drought. The average snowpacks in the Sierra Nevada over a number of years does. The lakes Stine talks about are fed by snow packs, not ephemeral storms. If the current glacial recesseion in Alaska is concurrent with drought in California, this would lend some plausibility to the theory. One problem I have is the reported existence of a "little ice age" in Europe during the same time frame. Not fully sure how this all fits together just yet.
