Re: Off topic icestorm-fracture mechanics of my driveway

well, skating on the golf course was great but then I went on a trail several miles along a stream and would occassionally break the surface and fall or catch myself...probably put in 8 miles...will go for 20 tomorrow, maybe.
Heartland wife had a tough time with the 5 cm of ice on the driveway. I think she is off at the lab working on a sonic device to shatter it. The dogs will be howling tonight. But, being male and a structural geologist of sorts, I tried the equation stress=force/area and was able to bang the tip of a shovel on it and cause it to fracture and also delaminate off of the concrete. The Columbia schools were closed yesterday (2nd day closed after 3 day weekend) because the maintenance crew was only able to clear 12 m of sidewalk in a day's efforts. They should try explosives, or hire me. To be fair, I tried my technique on heartland wife's side of the driveway and the ice was a bit too well adhered to the concrete.
OK...work.
