1857 San Andreas, John Crowell

I used a years CO2 yesterday...driving alone 140 miles to Kansas City Airport, flying to Santa Barbara, and then driving to Bakersfield. Not too bad a drive...a best of Toots and the Maytals playing, full moon, and 8 billion trucks climbing the Tejon pass. Kind of like a bad video game. I stopped off at Gorman. I stopped right in the parking lot between the motel and the Carl's junior. I'd been to the Carl's Junior there about 15 years ago on a field trip with John Crowell. John said to the best of what he could determine the 1857 rupture of the the San Andreas fault passed through the swimming pool of the motel (and the motel itself) and through or very close to the Carl's Jr.It looked like the pool is gone but the motel is not. These must pre-date Alquist Priola law.
John Crowell did the wave forecast for D-day and I heard him give a talk about it on the 50th anniversary of D-day. His GSA Special paper on Ridge Basin (what you are driving through on the way north to Gorman) came out a couple of years ago. He had a classic paper or 3 on the southern San Andreas fault and on what happens between double bends of strike-slip faults.
