Istanbul Gap |
The right lateral North Anatolia fault is considered to have a seismic gap in Marmara Sea, south of Istanbul. Pretty much the whole length of it to the east broke between the (late?) 1930s and 1999. The part to the west of Marmara Sea broke in 1912...it is controversial how far offshore it broke, but no one thinks it broke the part closer to Istanbul. So, there have been publications in the last few years giving it a high chance of failing within 30 years (I suppose since the time the analysis was done....).
