If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? As time goes on, more and better seismometers are put in place. Obviously, this allows networks to detect more and smaller quakes. Some misinterpret the result to mean that there are more quakes now than in the past. The truth is that we just couldn't detect them back then. Since we now have a microphone in the forest, we can record the sound of that tree falling.
