Here's another solution I hadn't thought of, a list server.

For those who don't know, a listserv is a private email based bulletin board. I (and probably many of you) already use such service.

When a person posts (or replies to) a message it is sent to the list server which then redistributes the message to all those on the list. (there's the multiple copies requirement).

Although this still allows for the possibility of editing of messages, it can be countered by having the server relay the messages without moderation approval. Most listserves do this, relying on the fact that registration is required to weed out the unwanted.

Also, the sent message is relayed back to the originator, who can then see whether the message has been edited or not.

One issue with this approach is anonymity. Relayed messages can be stripped of identifying information save for that which the poster volunteers. However, the owner/operator/moderator of the list will always be able to see who is who.

An advantage of this system is that anyone who uses email can use such a system.

A disadvantage is building trust in the owner/operator/moderator, which is much the same as it would be on a web based forum.

I would even offer to host such a system via my website, but I fear it would not meet it's potential because people, knowing my personal views on the subject matter, would likely not use if they disagreed with my views.

And hence, we come back to where we started.

A usenet newsgroup eliminates the possibility of editing, is archived, and is not moderated or run by anyone. The only caveat is that ANYONE can post ANYTHING. The best answer to that is to use the filters in the newsreader software. I think this is an advantage, as it gives each individual the freedom to control their own experience. Some may want to see all messages. Others may have a beef with a particular user and can killfile them.

If only I could get Google to pick up the group....

Brian
