Strain In Southern California

Hi All. Here is something that the people in southern California might find interesting. The following is just a small portion of the article. See the link for the complete article. Take Care…Don in creepy town. Interseismic Strain: The Salton trough is a collection of active faults and structures that have seen numerous earthquake during the later half of this century. Using a multi-fault segment elastic model (DIS3D), with geodetically determined fault velocites and locking depths [Bennett et al., 1996], we produced a synthetic SAR interferogram for a 'typical' two years time period for the Salton Trough region (Figure 3). There is about 18 mm of observable displacement across the region for the time period. The primary deformation gradient is dominated by the Pacific-North American plate motions. However, there are secondary effects to the interferogram from fault normal shortening of the Superstition fault, and extension in the Brawley seismic zone. Question: Do the North American - Pacific plate velocities dominate the regional deformation or are there unaccounted displacement that have not been recognized? Do the geodetically determined velocities match velocities estimated from SAR interferograms? What are the residual (un-modeled) regional velocities and what is driving them?
