Long Valley Caldera

Hi All. It sure has become quiet at Long Valley Caldera. In the last 24 to 48 hours there have been two very small quakes on the eastern side of the resurgent dome and one at the south rim of the caldera.

I haven’t seen anything with the data that would indicate something might be brewing. Of course the data only covers the inside of the caldera and not the area outside of it.

The magnetometers don’t show any increase in mass so no new large amounts of magma has entered into the caldera.

I’m not too concerned with the injection of new magma as I am with the eroding of the caldera wall beneath the resurgent dome. If enough of the wall is removed the dome could collapse. If that were to happen there could be one heck of an eruption. I don’t know how much of a warning (if any at all) there would be before this happened. Something to think about. I wonder if anyone is. Take Care…Don in creepy town.
