Alaskan 1964 Earthquake |
Hi All. While looking for some data about the Mare Island earthquake I came across this little bit of information about the Alaskan 1964 earthquake. The 1964 earthquake shook the epicentral region for about 3 minutes, compared to 8 seconds for the destructive Loma Prieta earthquake, seismograph stations throughout the world picked up seismic waves traveling around the earth's surface for about three hours. A wobble in the earth's rotation about its axis lasted for several years due to the sudden massive redistribution of the earth's crust. I though about the wobble for a minute or so then I got wondering about what might happen if the earth was impacted with a one or two mile wide asteroid. I rather doubt that much of anything would survive. Now that is a pleasant thought. Take Care…Don in creepy town.
