Vallejo earthquake and the Rodgers Creek fault

Hi All. There is no indication of strain building in the Bay Area, but I have this feeling that were going to see something in the area of Vallejo. There have been two microquakes in the last 8 hours.

Using the NEIC catalog with a 10 mile radius I found a quake that was estimated to have been a 6.2M. in 1898 There have been 20 quakes within that 10 mile radius.

Here is a newspaper account of the 1898 earthquake.

“March 30, 1898
Severe damage was done in San Francisco by the earthquake that struck at 11:43 p.m. The quake lasted 40 seconds and twisted chimneys and broke chandeliers. There was much panic. A building at 445 Clementina collapsed, and many chimneys were cracked. Whittier School on Harrison at Fourth was badly damaged because it was on made ground. Chimney on the Jefferson and Denman schools were so twisted that they were rebuilt. Heaviest damage was reported at the Naval Base at Mare Island. Congress appropriated $350,000 for repairs to the Naval Yard. A half-dozen fires were caused in Vallejo when oil lamps overturned”.

It is believed that the quake centered near Mare Island and may have been on the southern end of Rodgers Creek fault. It could also have been on the West Napa fault.

The reason this has caught my attention is that on 11/08/2000 there was a 3.0M near Vallejo just a little over two months after the Yountville quake and now we have these two microquakes. There is a lot of creep in the northern section of the Hayward fault. That creep has to go somewhere and I think were starting to see where some of it might be going. The Rodgers Creek fault with the outside chance of the West Napa fault. My money is on the Rodgers Creek fault. Take Care…Don in creepy town.
