A radio is a good one to put in the other shoe. The best tip I think I ever heard (besides don't smoke around gas leaks)is to have a crowbar or several stored for rescue purposes, in Japan many burned to death while trapped under debris that crowbars could have moved with a few strong backs and good crowbars, and a bouble bitted axe oughta do just fine for beams and with trees a chainsaw will do wonders.
