Well, I guess you could say it was an adventure although I didn't think of it that way at the time.

It was after the Rat Island quake in late 1965. Several of us were sent up to monitor aftershocks. I and one other man were sent to Amchitka to set up a seismic station and record aftershocks for a couple of months. We were the only ones on the island at that time. I was just the analyst; the other man was one of the World Wide installers and he set up the station.

The country is rather striking; no trees to speak of, tundra for ground cover, nice weather once it warmed up.

I said before I'd been to Attu. That's the farthest island in the chain and is east longitude. I also visited the team member on Shemya, which has a huge military base. Never went outside there, everything was in one huge building.
