Two years is an understatement. That earthquake was expected twenty years ago. Colleagues of mine set up an intense monitoring array in the area to try and pick up any premonitory activity. It ran for about five years and then the money ran out, and the earthquake happened fifteen years later.

But it's actually rather hard to get people concerned about preparedness unless there's been something fairly recently to focus their minds. In a country like Turkey they've plenty else to worry about, as well.
