One question would be whether there is a left-lateral NE-SW fault that crosses Salton Sea there...there are a series of them farther south...and the Elmore Ranch left-lateral fault M6.2 triggered the Superstition Hills M6.6(?) in 1987(?). Armbruster, Seeber, Sorlien 1998 AGU abstract has a model for this area...Nano's model but he did not go to AGU so I presented it....involves fault terminations and clockwise rotations. If there were a left-lateral earthquake across Salton Sea, it would redistribute stress rather severely on San Andreas fault...and.... so...might be worth looking at whether the NNE left-lateral plane or the WNW right-lateral plane is the correct one...by alignment of aftershocks.
