Petra keeps bringing up SAFOD in a context that suggests she believes that earthquake prediction is the goal of the project. It is not. The purpose is the advancement of the science of seismology - a better understanding of the earthquake process. To the extent that the project's discoveries advance the goal of earthquake prediction, that will be entirely incidental. From the SAFOD home page:
"The goal of SAFOD is to provide direct observational data on the composition, physical state and mechanical behavior of a major active fault zone at depth to test hypotheses pertaining to faulting and earthquake generation."
