working undercover

In my experience, holding ones cards close to one's vest rarely pays off. If one's theory is right, someone else will find it and take credit for it. We are gathering more data of all kinds on earthquakes at a prodigious rate. If theories are wrong, it takes much longer to figure it out in secret. Further, people who think working in secret is the best course generally have an incomplete knowledge of the their subject, and are taken less seriously.
