Callie, with regard to the 2004 Indonesian quake/tsunami, rhetorically asked: "Didn't animals sense disaster? Didn't countless animals of all kinds head for higher ground while nearly 300,000 people die?" The answer, of course, is that we don't know. No systematic study has yet been conducted. There is nothing but anecdotal evidence, and virtually none of even that evidence supports the hypotheses that animals actually sensed the quake before the rupture started. And, of course, the near-shore area is inhabited far more densely by people than by medium- and large-sized critters.
