But to be clear, an important contribution Kerry makes is simply to show how big and where have the large earthquake around Sumatra been. Half the problem in Sumatra was that the governments (and the scientists) thought the fault that broke in December was not capable of a big earthquake.

The other half of the problem, and one not yet clear, is when the earthquakes come. There are many "overdue" faults in the world, and it is not clear they are much more dangerous than the equally-active but less "overdue" ones.
