Yo Cathryn. It appears that the Cascadia subduction did just that in Dec. of 1700. It ruptured the whole length, which extends more than 600 miles along the Pacific coast from southern British Columbia to northern California. The good news is that this appears to be an exception rather then the norm.

“The historical record for this zone shows that earthquakes occur in clusters of up to five events, with an average time interval of 300 years between quakes”, said Chris Goldfinger, a marine geologist at Oregon State University. I have also seen the figure of 500 years between quakes so we could be close, or we still have some time left.

The two most recent quakes on this fault occurred in the year 1700 (a magnitude 9 event) and approximately the year 1500. It has now been 305 years since the last event. So is the Cascadia subduction zone finished for now or on the brink of event number five?

When it occurs and it will occur, of that there’s no doubt it will be unlike any quake you have ever felt before. Eugene won’t be affected by a tsunami, but they will feel the shaking. The energy released from the quake could be a 1000 times more then the Landers quake. I have been told the Cascade Mountain Range could rise as much as 20 feet and that the coast line could change in a heartbeat with land sinking into the ocean in some areas and rising in others. When it occurs it is going to be one Hell of a ride. Take Care…Don in creepy town
