January 14 Historical Earthquakes

Hi All,

I was doing some research and found that January 14th historically is a big day in the world of earthquakes. Thus I thought I would share some of what I learned....... Petra

DATE MAGNITUDE LOCATION
1/14/1546 7.0 32.00 - 35.50 Israel
Severe damage at Nabulus, Salt and Al Karak, Jordan.
A tsunami was generated, though the size unknown.

1/14/1899 7.0 20.00 -110.00 Gulf of California
Followed on 1/24 by a destructive earthquake in Guerrero and Oaxaca.

1/14/1903 8.3 15.00 -98.00 Oaxaca, Mexico
Off the coast of Guerrero, Mexico. No reports of damages are available, but there must have been some.

1/14/1924 7.3 35.50 139.20 No. Honshu, Japan
Severe damage was reported at Sagamo, Honshu. 14 killed.

1/14/1936 7.2 -60.00 -22.00 So. Sandwich Islands

1/14/1976 7.8 -29.20 -177.88 No. Kermadec Islnds
Damage on Raoul with intensity VIII.

1/14/1976 8.2 -28.42 -177.65 No. Kermadec Islnds
A tsunami was generated w/maximum height of 45 cm at Suva, Fiji and 6 cm at Apia, Samoa Islands. Damage occurred on Raoul Is.

1/14/1978 7.0 34.76 139.25 Central/So Honshu,JP
21 killed, 119 injured, 4 people missing. Damage occurred at Yokohama and Oshima. 94 houses were destroyed. A tsunami was generated w/maximum height 34 cm at Shima Is and 62 cm at Okada.

1/14/1987 7.0 42.53 142.93 Hokkaido, Japan
Felt with maximum intensity V at Kushiro. Also felt at Hiroo, Nemuro, Hachinohe and Morioka. Also felt at Toyoko and Yokohama.

On January 14 in the US, these are some interesting earthquakes;

1/14/1943 5.4 Maine
Felt in Dover and Foxcroft areas of Maine. Also felt at Old Town. Plaster cracked at Lisbon nearly 100 km from the epicenter. Felt in parts of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.

1/14/1961 6.0 Unimak Islands, Aleutians

1/14/1968 5.5 Andreanoff Islands, AK

1/14/1968 6.2 Andreanoff Islands, AK

1/14/1976 5.1 Central California
Plaster cracked and a light fixture fell at Avenal.

1/14/1983 6.0 Southern Alaska

1/14/1985 5.0 Andreanoff Islands, AK

1/14/1986 5.2 Central California
Maximum intensity of IV at Castroville, Chualar, Hollister, Salinas, San Ardo, San Juan Bautista and Santa Cruz. Felt from Arroyo Grande on the south to San Francisco and June Lake (near Mammoth). And was preceded by a 3.3 foreshock.
