USGS/big science

I sort of started this in a previous thread...after I said "now for some exaggeration"....I actually tend not to be enthusiastic about "Big Science"....including drilling into the San Andreas fault...although I don't really follow that so don't have the context to judge. It would seem to me that it is worth some long-term monitoring at Parkfield, but that a major effort to look for precursors might move elsewhere (although I'm not sure where because it is hard to localize the origin point of where a big earthquake might occur in the next 10 years. I don't even pay much attention to Earthscope. On the other hand, I am mixed up in a couple of projects that are bigger than "small science"...
I also can't judge whether what I do is the best use of taxpayer money...maybe we should give more tax breaks to the rich...the "Sunday Styles" section of the New York Times always has articles on their bizarre life styles....this week...drinks that cost over $1000, one of which has liquid edible 23 carat gold...
