? The Petroleum Industry & Seismology

Hello Everyone,

Late last year I read a news article that said the petroleum industry had been help some Southern, CA seismologists in locating a fault zone that had approximately 200 to 300 underground undetected faults.

During the course of years the petroleum industry has been using different methods in locating underground oil reserves and yet it appears to be something new in regarding this industry cooperating with the seismology community in an effort to find these undetected faults. As I know little about either communities interests, it seems from what I recall from the article, this kind of cooperation was unusual. Can anyone explain why it is unusual and why the geophysical researchers have not employed the same efforts on their own in the past?

Further, what methods would be employed by the petroleum industry that would provide information that is not available by space satellites today?

From North of The Golden Gate...Petra
