M6.9 east of Honshu

There was a M6.9 rather far east of Honshu. It is east of the trench...so where the ocean crust is not subducting. It is a normal-fault solution (see link)...which means the plate is getting stretched as it is dragged towards the subduction zone (there can also be a "bulge" in an area away from the part that is subducting..
