Imagine all of Gilroy and Morgan Hill under 30 feet of water, nearly all the roads in south Santa Clara and San Benito counties closed, bridges crunched like Lego toys into creeks, chemical spills in downtown Hollister, busted water and gas mains on every corner, explosions erupting, backed up toilets, no power, no tap water.

And you don't have a flashlight, no gasoline, no car to escape in – it's buried under several tons of rubble. So you hunker down, trapped, and wait for help.

But what if help doesn't come for five days as in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina? What if it doesn't come for weeks?

That's a scenario painted by an array of experts, both scientists and local and state administrators, should an earthquake of 6.7 magnitude or greater rock the greater Bay Area. It's not a matter of "if" but "when" the Big One will hit, say scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey. A recent study by USGS concludes it will happen within the next 25 years.
