Diane, I have little to add to Don's execellent and extensive list. Since your triplets have ashma, it goes without saying you will need a supply of their medications. If you have neighbors nearby you may want to work together with them and add a generator to your supplies or group supplies. During the 94 quake in the valley we were without power for almost 24 hours. You may be without even longer. Our neighbor has a big bus and a generator. It was nice to be able to know and see what was going on as we could not drive very far and nothing was open. As teachers, my wife and I always had food, water and a change of clothing and especially a spare pair of tennis shoes for walking, stored in our car. I also had a few tools for rescue work, just in case. Gloves are very handy for all! When your children start school, you will want to work closely with them so both you and the children know how the school will handle the situation. If you are not satisified with their preparations, GET INVOLVED! Friends, neighbors and an informed community are great assets. As for possible fires, I assume you have manditory brush clearance. Right after the 94 quake, I turned off the power to our house. It came back on at about 11:30 PM when many people were asleep and unaware. There were three fires in the area at homes with damaged wiring or appliances. I did not turn mine on until morning when I could check everything before hand. Did not turn the gas back on for a week due to after shocks. Another thing I still do is keep a pair of heavy sole slippers or shoes and a flashlight by the bed. Our quake was at about 4:30 in the morning. Do you have a chimney on your house? Our brick chimney cracked and almost fell. Be careful or have it braced if it has not already been done. Many fireplaces in our area were compressed in the inital shock and exploded, showering bricks and concrete through out the room. I would imagine the new codes have eliminated most of the dangerous ones by now. I know, never assume! If you have nearby neighbores make sure they are prepared also. As my wife and I told the students, it is not if, BUT WHEN! Good luck and stay safe. Bob in Woodland Hills
